What You Focus on Expands

Guys I’m going to be honest. I’ve been in a funk since March 5, the day I received a text from one of my top customers that they would no longer be using our dumpster services due to pricing.

This was a customer that I had put a ton of time and energy into and it was devastating to lose them. There is a much deeper story here and a lineup of lessons learned that I’ll share later but today I want you to know how I’ve moved on from the loss and re-focused on what’s ahead.

I have had very little progress with the dumpster company since March. Is it because I lost this account? NO. What I’ve realized is that it was because I have continued to focus on the fact that I lost the account. For 2 months now my thoughts and conversations have been all about this situation. How it happened, why it happened, what I could have done better, what’s fair and also unfair about the situation, how I feel taken advantage of, etc. The list goes on and on and on.

Last week I listened to a podcast from John Maxwell that literally took me out of the frozen state I’ve been in. It was titled “What you Focus on Expands” and is part of a series he is doing about how to lead through crisis. Here are a few of my big takeaways:

  1. Put the important things before you and have the courage to do those important things. They will expand and what’s behind you will shrink.

  2. But behind you your reactions to the situation, put before you reflections on what you have learned from the situation, your reflections will create a response that leads to growth.

  3. Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose. Don’t count your losses count your lessons.

  4. Keep your values and your why in front of you during crisis.

  5. Put behind you the difficulty, put before you the progress.

  6. Everything worthwhile is UPHILL.

  7. Put personal benefits behind you put people and their gain in front of you.

There was so much depth to this conversation and I can’t encourage you enough to take a listen if you’re feeling stuck in any area of your life!

I reset my focus for the Roll-Off company to be on what lies ahead. What I realized after listening to this Podcast is that losing this Residential Customer was actually the best thing that ever happened to me. They kept me comfortable in the residential space which is not where we need to be. I’ve been talking for a year about getting our WBE certification to put ourselves in the commercial space. I have 15 competitors who can be cheap in the residential space. As a woman owned business servicing commercial contractors I would have 2 competitors and can command top dollar for our services. What in the world. I’ve been wallowing over pennies when top dollar for my team is out there for taking.

So grateful I listened to this podcast and started putting the vision and what’s important back in front of me.

Would love to hear your thoughts on the podcast and areas of your life where it helped you get unstuck!

XOXO
