You may know him on Instagram as “Technology Sandbox” --- and Britton Lawson’s day-to-day job is just that ---- working with current and emerging construction technologies from grade control to telematics to bring efficiency to the jobsite.
“I started my career at tech school because I wanted to make my sandbox a little bit bigger.”
As director of construction technology at Veit & Company, Britton is the internal technology champion. He helps the organization get the best technology return on investment and evolve their processes for the future. Britton joined me on the podcast to discuss the current and future state of construction tech.
This was a really important episode for Trevor and I as we have been considering updating our fleet of excavators with the 2D & 3D for the last year. We have been dragging our feet a bit because we are primarily in residential work. Spending a few hours to set up takeoffs for a 1-2 day dig didn’t seem to compute for us. But as the projects get bigger and more complex our need for tech grows. We’re also in the middle of expanding our services to support commercial contractors - so we know technology is going to be critical.

As small business owners this is a big decision not just from an investment standpoint but also implementation. We want to set ourselves apart as an excavation contractor but we are limited on resources when it comes to staff. Britton talked me through my fears and concerns on taking the big tech step. He also advised me on the most successful way to implement company wide by assigning an internal champion.
